Grad na rubu katastrofe
The informal initiative of architects, urban planners, and activists known as Degrowth City (Grad Odrasta) organized a series of workshops and conferences titled “Minutes to Disaster City” during 2019 and 2020. These events emerged as a professional and civic response to the systematic degradation of urban space in Split, driven by a complete reliance on tourism growth and a profound lack of responsible spatial planning. The primary objective was to transform passive dissatisfaction into constructive advocacy, offering tangible solutions for a healthier and more equitable urban development framework in the 21st century.
Through public panels, working groups, and guided field walks, the program gathered local and international experts alongside citizens to discuss the concept of degrowth, the ecology of public spaces, and participatory urbanism. The foundation for these discussions was the “Disaster Map,” a comprehensive analytical representation of Split’s socio-spatial anomalies. By actively participating in the organization of these workshops on both occasions, members of our team gained invaluable theoretical and practical knowledge regarding participatory actions within a sensitive urban fabric. Furthermore, we established lasting collaborations and built a strong network of professionals dedicated to creating spatial policies strictly rooted in environmental and social justice, and community inclusion.
