The complete reconstruction of this ground-floor apartment in Split, Croatia, marks a sophisticated architectural response to the challenges of micro-living. Spanning only 27 square meters, the project’s primary objective was to convert a dilapidated and long-neglected space into a high-quality studio apartment suitable for both short-term rentals and extended stays. Within the rigid constraints of a 7.5 x 3.6-meter footprint, spatial quality was achieved through a bold interior intervention: the insertion of a single, multifunctional furniture block that dictates the flow and utility of the entire residence.

This central unit operates with the precision of a Swiss Army knife, integrating several essential living functions into one seamless carpentry item. It encapsulates a wardrobe, storage units, a bed, seating elements, and shelving, while also housing the primary installation verticals. The genius of the design lies in its adaptability; the bed can be reconfigured into a sofa, and storage compartments can double as installation access points or display shelves. By compressing these core functions into a single architectural volume, the rest of the floor plan remains open and uncluttered, preserving a sense of spaciousness that belies the apartment’s actual size.

The construction phase took place during the unprecedented challenges of the first pandemic wave in early 2020. Despite the global uncertainty, the project moved forward with a thorough overhaul of the existing structure. All old materials were stripped away, followed by the installation of a new screed and an additional layer of wall insulation. To expedite the renovation and preserve the integrity of the original structure, new electrical and plumbing systems were routed through this added insulation layer rather than being chased into the existing walls.

The aesthetic direction was primarily influenced by the limited availability of natural light. To counter this, the design utilizes smooth, bright, and slightly reflective surfaces that effectively draw daylight into the deepest parts of the apartment. Matte black accents in the kitchen, sanitary fixtures, and hardware provide a sharp contrast, lending the space a modern, refreshed character. Furthermore, the lighting is organized on a meticulous grid, allowing users to switch between various scenarios—from bright functional modes to intimate evening settings. The success of this project is a direct result of the close collaboration between the designers, the young family of investors, and a dedicated team of contractors, proving that thoughtful design can transform even the smallest footprint into a luxurious living experience.
