The reconstruction of this 42 m² commercial space, situated on the ground floor of a residential building, serves as a compelling case study in adaptive reuse tailored for a contemporary creative professional. The project’s primary objective was to transform a conventional business unit into a highly specialized live-work environment for a local artist deeply involved in film and video production. This professional requirement necessitated a design approach that prioritizes acoustic performance and spatial versatility while strictly adhering to a limited budget. The resulting intervention is a masterclass in functional minimalism, where every material choice and layout decision serves multiple purposes.

One of the most defining aspects of the architectural solution is the deliberate inversion of standard spatial orientation. Contrary to traditional residential layouts where living areas typically occupy the southern side to maximize sunlight, this project places the service core—comprising the kitchen, bathroom, and storage—to the south. The main multifunctional area is oriented toward the north. This strategic reversal is directly influenced by the client’s work in the film industry, as northern light provides the stable, glare-free environment essential for video editing and photography. This layout ensures that the most active zone of the apartment remains thermally stable and visually controlled throughout the day.

Materiality was dictated by the dual constraints of acoustic requirements and cost-effectiveness. To manage the internal soundscape and prevent echoes, the walls and ceilings were clad in wood fiber acoustic panels. Left in their raw form, these panels provide a sophisticated textural quality to the space while meeting professional recording standards. The flooring consists of affordable yet durable PVC, chosen for its industrial resilience. The entire interior palette is dominated by dark tones, a decision made to eliminate unwanted light reflections that could interfere with technical creative processes. This creates a focused, immersive atmosphere that functions effectively as a professional studio.

The architectural narrative is completed by the strategic integration of heavy stage curtains. These elements act as soft partitions, allowing the resident to reconfigure the 42 m2 area according to immediate needs. Whether the space is being used as a bedroom, a living room, a photo studio, or a venue for social gatherings, the curtains provide the necessary flexibility to divide or expand functional zones. Beyond their spatial role, they further contribute to the acoustic dampening of the interior. By harmonizing technical precision with a low-budget framework, the project demonstrates that high-performance creative spaces can be achieved through clever zoning and honest material application.
