The redesign of the Vanjski area in Šibenik is a strategic urban intervention aimed at revitalizing a neglected peripheral space into a high-quality public square. Despite its historical significance, the site’s triangular geometry is currently dominated by high-intensity traffic and architectural clutter. The project does not seek to compete with the city’s main square, Poljana, but rather to function as its distinct satellite. By acknowledging the existing constraints, the design proposes a spatial identity that balances the site’s role as a major pedestrian crossroads with the need for a protected, intimate urban environment.

The core conceptual driver is the idea of a “geological shift” or landform building. By manipulating the ground plane through denivellation, the square is shielded from the surrounding traffic, creating a sanctuary that simultaneously generates new usable volume beneath its surface. This “under the rug” space is designed to house a variety of programs, ranging from small local crafts and service units to exhibition spaces and the presentation of potential archaeological finds. This structural approach creates a unique version of a corner building, one defined by artificial topography rather than vertical massing, aligning with the city’s urban planning goals for active public ground floors.

Materiality and nature play a crucial role in establishing the square’s atmosphere. The existing tall elm trees are preserved and integrated into the new layout, providing essential shade and a sense of continuity. Beneath these trees, a terrace is formed using a continuous bench system that wraps around the trunks, complemented by mobile furniture to ensure maximum flexibility for public events. The floor surface of the square is conceived as a timber deck, utilizing staggered wooden planks of varying lengths. This choice of material offers a warm, tactile, and spontaneous feel, contrasting with the hard stone surfaces typical of the historical center. The alignment of the planks emphasizes the geometric folds of the topography, further articulating the project’s sculptural character.

The traffic solution adopts a strategy of “acupuncture” interventions within the existing corridor. Recognizing the critical importance of these roads for Šibenik’s connectivity, the proposal focuses on enhancing pedestrian safety and vehicular flow through subtle adjustments. Furthermore, the broader scope of the project includes the southern ancillary zone, which acts as a green link between the Lujo Marun Park and the city market. Through the densification of greenery, the reconstruction of stone pavements, and the strategic relocation of utility infrastructure, the project ensures a seamless and safe pedestrian transition, successfully anchoring Vanjski Square back into the vital fabric of the city.
